A SHORT BUT NICE MOMENT
It’s quite a while since I have been along to the Galerie Maeght in Paris. (http://www.maeght.com/)
but it is one of the most interesting in my book for modern and contemporary art. Some of my friends have what I define as « Gallery Days » . They wander around the different quarters which have the most interesting exhibitions and just pop in. It’s ridiculous to say but I always feel a little nervous about « just popping in » as if the owner will jump on me a a potential buyer. Silly, isn’t it!
I knew nothing about François Lamore’s work but had come across it in an art magazine. This was enough to entice me over to the Rue de Bac and see the painting for myself.
He’s lucky in my book as he was born to a French Mother and an American Father so from the start was imbibed in a double culture. He speaks many languages, Arabic being one of them. He also spent some time in Japan.
THE ARTIST
What I liked most about the description of his work at the gallery was that there is an idea of participation in his landscapes. You need to explore them and probably go further in your own observation. I spoke to a young man in the gallery, asking him how this painting had been done….on velvet and he scraped areas which gave the « painting » many dimensions.
In actual fact the velvet was midnight blue which unfortunately is not reflected in the photo.
Around it were black and white images which looked the same and yet were not.
His work is described as being philosophical, a dialogue between different periods. A description which is a little difficult for me to understand when looking at his work. For me it is much more a discovery of other images which seem to float around, calling out to be seen. I like it, but not all of it. I find paintings with skulls rather macabre.
