SEEING SOMETHING DIFFERENT

We all have those days when we have to push ourselves to go out. I’d been reading all the morning - and very happy to be engrossed in my book. The sun was shining so l gave myself a kick and said « out ». There was an exhibition of Franz Ackerman’s work that l wanted to see in a gallery.

It was starting that day, so off l went at my usual zippy pace. Crossed Anne on the way and she was returning from the Paul Klee exhibition at Beaubourg. There had not been too many people. Something of course l would definitely be seeing. I got to the Gallery Templon only to find that they were installing the exhibition and it wasn’t opening for a few days. Oh well, l’d go to the Klee. By the time l got back to the Beaubourg, the crowds were looking like this….and l knew it would be for Klee.

Looking up, I saw this poster.

Jerome and Laurent had been and found their visit worthwhile. The poster taken of course from one of his paintings had not really enthralled me but it would mean going back to my book if l decided that l wouldn’t give it a go.

Just in case the crowds were not too daunting for Paul Klee, I went up to the top gallery. No Go. So back down l came to look at the Gerard Fromanger.

Colour plays a keen role in his work and also social changes.

He is a French artist born on 6 September 1939 in the  Yvelines. A painter who uses collage, sculpture, photography, cinema and lithography.  What I certainly didn’t know  is that he was associated with the French artistic movement of the 1960s and 1970s called Figuration Narrative (new figurative representation), somewhat like pop art. Urban life and the consumer society are themes well represented in his work.

His work is curious. The passers by:

Walking by department stores

A girl walking down a street in Florence

Red which is continuing role he uses right throughout his life

The lined portraits of friends where the face magically emerges

 China

Abstract works, two of which I really liked…..

Two of our French philosophers have written about him and quite extensively but I don’t know if l will be following up on that. In fact I’m really not too sure what l think about him as an artist. One thing is sure, he combines everything technique which i can think of. It was worthwhile going….now back to my book.
