FACES YOU THINK YOU HAVE SEEN BEFORE
Waking along the Ecole de Médicine I go past the Cordeliers where there are often temporary exhibitions in a space which I really love. You have visited it with me quite a few times. It was five to 11 and a new exhibition was opening at 11am. One thing is sure there was no-one at all around.
I walked into the space to see this.
It might be good to be alone, if of course there is no explanation about the artist. I was probably too early as there was nothing at all. Onto Internet when I got home and finally going through the Gallery presenting him, The gallery Davimsy, I understood who he was. A Flemish artist from Gand in Belgique. Someone again who was intrigued by graffitis art or tagging and actually went around leeching other artist’s works. I don’t imagine that this went down too well. He may have been noticed but I guess disliked. He moved to England in the early 90’s and learnt a lot more even working on games for Harry Potter. Back to France where he worked in agencies for a couple of years before deciding to dedicate himself totally to his own art work.
No doubt about it. There are multiple influences. Perhaps not all « déjà vu » . It’s very personal work filled with many emotions.
The name he uses is RAuW which means brut in Flemish. His huge faces have other faces within - you feel you have seen them before, but have you? They are really different, aren’t they?
