and perhaps this also……

of course this…….
Andy Warhol 1957

perhaps you know these as well?

Humphrey Bogart 1946

Audrey Hepburn 1956

Elizabeth Taylor 1946

Now be honest, do you know who the photographer is or was?

Yousuf Karsh

One of the greatest photographers of all time Yousuf Karsh, was an Armenian who as a boy survived the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by Turkish Ottoman Empire and arrived to Canada at age 16.In 1928 Karsh apprenticed with photographer John Garo in Boston then returned to Canada where Prime Minister Mackenzie King helped him photograph the visiting diplomats. In 1941 Karsh took the legendary portrait of Winston Churchill - one of the most reproduced images in history. The photographic subjects of Karsh (Armenian name Hovsep Karshian) included Pablo Picasso, Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, Queen Elizabeth II, Clark Gable, Audrey Hepburn, Pope John Paul II, Grace Kelly, John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, Sophia Loren, Laurence Olivier, George Bernard Shaw, Andy Warhol, Frank Lloyd Wright, Humphrey Bogart, Mother Theresa, Walt Disney, Mohammed Ali, Martin Luther King and many more.

I hate to admit it as although I know the photographs and probably have seen many in the list above, I could not have given you the name of the photographer. Go on, say it. « Shame on you » …..It was an extraordinary exhibition at the Mona Bismark centre. I went with Marielle. Am glad to say she was like me….recognizing the photos but……

Look at his home page....it's awesome !http://www.karsh.org/

Commentaires

Michael Keane a dit…
Had never heard of the photographer, either, but his photographs are genius.
Winston: the bulldog.
Jack and Jackie: embodiment of an American Utopia.
Andy: Did he need to divert attention from his face?
Humphrey: the cool, tough guy.
Audrey: exactly why I fell in love with her!
Elizabeth: No comment.
