IS IT REAL - OR NOT ?
Learning is a wonderful process and I would like to think that I did this every day. Swanie makes a list of things she would like to discover - that is a lot better than her grandmother suggesting an exhibition. I’m always surprised. This time it was Trompe l’Oeil. From my point of view this was just painting suggesting something like a cupboard, a window.....It has its origins in ancient frescoes and mosaics. «Deceiving the eye» can take on very different forms from furniture to fashion, all kinds of art and materials can be imitated. When I came to think about it became obvious. Linoleum, wood, wall paper, glass, jewels....but I had never really thought about such items as being trompe l’oeil, more like copies. I was wrong, wasn’t I? As we went on that treasure hunt, Swan was a hive of information, pointing things out to me as we walked through hundreds of objects dating from the middle ages to the 20th century. Here are just a few.......
