WOMEN'S LIBERATION

Image
After the exhibition on Pop Art it seemed like the right time to visit Le Musée de la Monnaie and see « Women House ». Those years in the 60’s and 70’s when Women too stood up for their rights. The French were really not into the Women’s Liberations movement. I arrived back in Paris in the late 70’s and had been part of the movement in Australia. However, I have absolutely no memory of women screaming for their rights, just as they should have done. In actual fact, I never really belonged to any feminist group. I was divorced with a small child and just had to get on with living and earning enough so Nicky could have a decent life. I did want to see this exhibition and was not disappointed.   Women  House is the meeting of two concepts: a gender - the female - and a space - the domestic one. Public space was always masculine while the domestic space was for a long time the prison or the shelter of women. One got married, gave up a job and became a housewife a...

FROM THE EROTICA TO LIFE LIKE ANIMALS AND BIRDS ...

I am always exhilarated when I come out of the Picasso Museum. Lots of questions buzzing around in my head but the catalogue should provide some answers! So I would go onto the Kartsen Greve gallery and see what Claire Morgan’s work was all about. (To be honest Laurent had sent me pictures which enticed me to go.) A family group too left the Picasso museum at the same time and headed for the K.G. They were a nice family. A couple of adolescents who had been interested in the Picasso erotica and two-8/10-year-olds who had asked a lot of intelligent questions. I wondered what would happen here.

Claire Morgan is of Irish origin and apparently an artist who is sought on the international scene today. It’s the kind of remark which I tire of fast as we can’t know all the artists but sometimes it’s as if you were asked, « Oh you didn’t know so-and-so… » as if you were a complete ignoramus. This is an exhibition created for the gallery space. I might add that it is quite beautiful. ...

1932 AN EROTIC YEAR

Image
Laurent had sent over to me a series of pictures of installations at the Karsten Greve gallery. Despite my lack of interest in such work, these looked fascinating. I’ll give it a try. It was a cold bleak day when I started off. As I do everything I can on foot in Paris, I try out new ways of going somewhere with the GPS on my ‘phone. Such new paths can be fascinating or frankly silly - like going down all the parallel streets to get to your destination making the walk at times very much longer. This was the case so by the time the turn to the gallery came into sight, I changed course and went by the Picasso museum. A new exhibition opened in October which was written in black lettering on my list. « 1932 - and Erotic year .» With such a title I was sure the crowds would be queuing up for some way…no-one. So change of course and into the Picasso. May have been no-one outside but this was not the case inside.    The exhibition was set out month by month. 366 days...
