A MECHANICAL BESTIARY !

Image
This was to be the first exhibition ever devoted solely to automated clocks of the Renaissance. Also in a gallery which I did not know. The Kugel Gallery. Thank you Marielle as I certainly would not have gone but your description tempted me to!  Over thirty automaton were on display. The largest collection ever assembled. A menagerie of exotic animals: lions, camels, elephants, bears, monkeys… animals dominate the automaton kingdom, but a few humans are there as well. A Turkish horseman swinging his sword, and lion and bear tamers pulling on leashes. Give you an idea of how small they are The young attendant saw me taken an interest in all the detail and whispered in my ear (yes really), that one of these little gems would chime any minute. It did, but so fast that I didn’t have time to  catch the movement and sound with my iPhone. Unfortunately this was the only one that did strike the hour while I was there. A video displayed the movements of each one. It brought a smile t

ANOTHER OF THOSE NAMES WHICH ARE IMPOSSIBLE - FOR ME - TO PRONOUNCE

Another name which I just can’t pronounce. Gabritschevsky was difficult enough and then I came across INHANCUTILITATEM by Josef Nadj. I was walking past the Collège des Bernardins and saw the poster which seemed to be intriguing. Photographs? Water colors? Why all that blue? From the outside of the old vestry, I saw this. Was it real? Practically dreamlike. Obviously I knew nothing about the artist. Josef Nadja is a choreographer and plastic artist. Here he is presenting a series of photographic blue-prints redesigned from the beginning of photography. Outside of his profession as Choreographer and Director of National choreography of Orlean, he describes himself as an artist without barriers. Dancer, plasticien, photographer he adds that his is passionate about humanity (oh yes) and romantic too. For this exhibition he  wanted to look at the oldest form of blue-prints and when they stopped being produced - nearly a century ago. It’s a blue and practically mystical return to

A RATHER BEWILDERING EVENT

A little earlier in the year, around April, I had read a very interesting article on the Collection at the « Abbaye d’Auberive » which would be shown at the Halle Saint Pierre. « We » have visited th Halle Saint Pierre quite a few times and usually I go with Laurent. RAW AND COLOURFUL After the exhibition of  Eugène Gabritschevsky’s work at the Maison Rouge, I had had my dose of art brut  for a while especially as that exhibition had been so spectacular. The Halle Saint Pierre event was to close this week, so I suggested to Laurent that we went along.  It was a gorgeous day. The Halle Saint Pierre is next to the Sacré Coeur. This is what the poster looked like..... What we would see If I had done my homework before, perhaps I would have been a little less bewildered by such an eclectic work. Until I got home and starting to do some research on the exhibition, I really wasn’t too sure what I had been  looking at. Some of the artists I knew and they had not been
